The Bank of the Philippine Islands Foundation, Inc. has chosen three graduating students from the College of Arts and Sciences as among the 30 recipients of the annual Bank of the Philippine Islands-Department of Science and Technology (BPI-DOST) Science Awards.
Established in 1989, the BPI-DOST Science Award aims to recognize and provide incentives to budding scientists and researchers from BPI’s ten partner universities in the Philippines
Professors Rosario Rubite and Arnold Hallare of the Department of Biology renewed their UP Scientist I and II titles, respectively, while Professor Junie Billones of the Department of Physical Sciences and Mathematics was promoted to UP Scientist III. They were officially recognized as UP Scientists for 2017-2019 in a ceremony held on March 21, 2018 at the Bahay ng Alumni, UP Diliman.
The University of the Philippines Manila through the College of Arts and Sciences embarked on a milestone in sports. The student athletes trained by the faculty members of the Department of Physical Education, College of Arts and Sciences, including the CAS Dean who is the Head Coach of the UP Chess Team, participated in the Association of Local Colleges and Universities (ALCU) National Games held in Mabalacat, Pampanga from April 15 – 19, 2018 as a Guest School. The UP Manila Team engaged in three sports event : Basketball, Table Tennis, and Chess.
Dr. Michel Chossudovsky spoke on Global Poverty to Exclusion and Despair Reversing the Tide of War and Civilization during A Roundtable Discussion (RTD) at UP Manila Theater on March 7, 2018. Significant number of UP Manila faculty and students attended the event. A Canadian economist, author and conspiracy theorist, Dr. Chossudovsky is a professor emeritus of economics at the University of Ottawa[ and the president and director of the Centre for Research on Globalization.
The College of Arts and Sciences through the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Manila Studies Program hosted a lecture on "Inhabiting Everyday through the Bangsamoro Imaginary: Insights from an Ethnography of Maguindanaons in the Cotabato Region" by Prof. Rosa A. Castillo at UP Manila Theater on March 5, 2018. Prof Castillo is a teaching and research staff at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin's Department for Southeast Asian Studies. She has taught courses in anthropology at both UP Diliman and Manila campuses from 2005 to 2011. The following is an abstract of Prof Castllo’s lecture:
The National Committee on Cinema of the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) is celebrating its 10th Cinema Rehiyon Film Festival from Feb. 25-28. It aims to be the platform for critical conversations in shaping the future of Philippine Cinema and highlight the value of cultivating regional cinema and its contributions to the national development of cinema. The event is a part of celebrating activities of National Arts Month of NCAA this February.
