Abstract:
Health-oriented non-governmental organizations significantly contribute to the
advancement of health and well-being among Filipinos. There is a gap in understanding the
situation of healthcare professionals in these organizations. With that, the study focused on
investigating the communication competence, emotional labor, and organizational commitment
among healthcare professionals working at a Philippine non-governmental organization. A
quantitative study was conducted among a total of 183 respondents, comprising 180 patients and
3 healthcare professionals, in the clinics of Ugat ng Kalusugan or Roots of Health in Puerto
Princesa, Palawan. Partial correlation analysis was used in analyzing the influence of
communication competence on the relationship between emotional labor and organizational
commitment; while, Spearman’s rho was utilized in evaluating the relationship between
emotional labor, organizational commitment, and communication competence. It was shown that
communication competence has no direct influence on the emotional labor and organizational
commitment of healthcare professionals. However, communication competence had a
significantly positive and nearly perfect relationship with emotional labor. The study also
interestingly found that only the net monthly income of the patients, among all the demographic
variables, is significantly related to the communication competence of healthcare professionals.
The study concluded that the influence of communication competence on the relationship between emotional labor and organizational commitment of healthcare professionals in a
Philippine NGO was not significant. It is recommended for future researchers to further
investigate this by extending their studies on several non-governmental organizations and a
larger sample size of healthcare professionals to increase the likelihood of obtaining significant
results.
