The Philippines is still considered a young population, however, is projected to become an
ageing population in less than a decade. Thus this study investigates the aspects discerned to be
crucial to the well-being of the elderly, evaluates existing services directed for them, and derives
recommendations from such analysis. The study utilized a case study research design to
thoroughly analyze issues and services. It involved five dyad interviews with ten senior citizens
from the senior citizens association, as well as information obtained from two key informants at
the barangay center. Thematic analysis revealed eleven themes that addressed key aspects:
identifying pressing issues, analyzing existing services, providing recommendations, and
highlighting the contributions of the elderly. The results revealed that all aspects were of great
importance but the physical aspect succeeded to be the most pressing among the four. In terms of
services, awareness, and usage are at high levels mainly due to the efforts of information
dissemination by the Mariano Espeleta 1 barangay officials. With regards to recommendations,
an increase in subsidy and improvement to healthcare facilities is majorly urged. All of these
findings are critical as the contributions of the elderly stand pivotal to the function of the elderly
in the barangay. In general, the results and findings of this study allowed a platform for the
elderly’s appeals to be heard and be given necessary services. To further advance this study, it
would be perceptive to consider other aspects critical to the elderly as well as existing services
related to such. |
