Abstract:
Sibuyan Mangyan Tagabukid is one of indigenous peoples in the
Philippines which is least studied. Problems of illiteracy and poverty are one
of the pressing issues of the indigenous peoples.
The Department of Education (DepEd) launched a program to address
the problems on illiteracy and poverty. The program is presently known as the
Alternative Learning System. This study focuses on the Alternative Learning
System of the Sibuyan Mangyan Tagabukid in Sitio Areta, Canjalon, San
Fernando, located in the mountains in Romblon. The evaluation of the
Alternative Learning System revolves on the attainment of its objectives such
as the increase in literacy rate and the alleviation of poverty.
Fifteen (15) were chosen as respondents out of thirty-five (35) Sibuyan
Mangyan Tagabukid who are Learner-Participants in the Alternative Learning
System from Sitio Areta. The method used was purposive sampling. The
Alternative Learning System Mobile Teacher helped arrange the survey
interview. The interviews were conducted in their homes and in their bunk
house.
