Korean Students in the Philippines and Their Effects on Philippines-South Korean Relations

Abstract

This study analyzed the causes and effects of South Korean students flocking in the Philippines and how they can affect diplomatic relations of the Philippines and South Korea. In- depth interviews with Department of Foreign Affairs and Embassy of the Republic of Korea officials were conducted as well as quantitative surveys to determine the perception of Korean students and Filipino stakeholders on this phenomenon. The findings of the study disclosed that South Koreans are primarily driven by their desire for better English education. They prefer studying in the Philippines mainly for its proximity and cheap education and the globalization policies implemented in South Korea triggered this student mobility. Moreover, South Korean students themselves do not have a very significant impact on the general diplomatic relations. Instead, their effects were felt more on the economic and cultural aspect of the Philippines locally.
