The Eye Republic Group of Eye Clinics which is one of the fastest growing
ophthalmology practices in the area with a growing team of doctors and a number of convenient
locations. Its focus is to provide their patients the highest quality medical and surgical eye care
possible, to preserve, enhance, and restore vision. The Eye Republic implements a semi-paper
based system in processing and keeping records. Presently, two of their clinics are using an
automated system, the Clinic GENIE — a proprietary system working on a local environment —
which offers some features for other specialties like OBGyne, Pediatric, etc., that the clinic will
never use. Since their current system works on a local environment only, there is no way for the
clinical systems of the two clinics to communicate and share data, thus with this kind of system
the clinic encounters problems such as duplication of records and difficulty in retrieving of data
from one clinic to another. Also, since only a few of their clinics managed to implement the
usage of the Clinic GENIE, other clinics encounter the problems of missing records, difficulty in
retrieving records, and difficulty in reproducing records on top of what the other clinics that
already use Clinic GENIE encounters. The drawbacks in the current system they are using
affect the quality of service and the daily operations of the clinics. Thus, to address the needs of
the group of clinics, the Eye Republic Information System (EyeRIS) was created. The system
basically provides the clinical system functionalities customarily designed for the Eye Republic
such as for patient consultation and eye assessment. Since the system is web-based, storage
and retrieval of data become easier since it provides access of the system records from any
place where the web is accessible. With the system, the need to replicate patient information
when visiting from one clinic to another are prevented. Furthermore, information is also secured
because only the authorized users can access specific functionalities of the system. |
