Abstract:
This study aims to present the relationship of redundancy plan implementation
and the attitude and behavior of employees of Lucent Technologies. For this study,
attitude is referred as morale and job satisfaction, while behavior is referred as
productivity and performance level.
Lucent Technologies Philippines, Inc. is a provider of telecommunications
services and equipment. It is engaged in various organizations that secure its services.
As an open system organization, Lucent is affected by the changes happening in the
Philippines, its external environment in which it moves in. For the previous years, the Philippines has been struggling in an effort to alleviate
the continuously depreciating economy brought about by the political crisis. Due to this,
the economic situation in the country has worsened resulting peso fluctuation. Situations
like these affect organizations like Lucent. In addition to this is the fact that Lucent is
affected by the problems of their telecommunications companies clients. Because of these dilemmas, Lucent is affected internally such that it has not been meeting its target
revenue. Because of this, Lucent management decided to streamline and restructure.
In an effort to keep the company going despite of the closure of other
organizations, Lucent management, after analyzing its organizational situation and needs,
implemented the redundancy plan — a strategy used and implemented by the company to
its employees whose works are being duplicated - of reducing the number of employees.
In this process, the employees were evaluated in terms of the functions they perform.
Redundant employees or employees with works that are being duplicated are offered in
compulsory a separation package.
Having adapted this strategy as a change, this then could inevitably create an
impact on the behavior of retained employees.
In gathering data for the study, the researcher distributed survey questionnaires to
thirty (30) of the retained employees of Lucent who were randomly selected. The
researcher also conducted an interview with the Human Resources Specialist of Lucent.
It was found out that redundancy plan implementation has negative
relationship with attitude (morale and job satisfaction) and with performance level
behavior such that after the redundancy plan implementation in Lucent, the morale
and job satisfaction attitude and performance level behavior of its employees were
low.
However, it was also found out that the implementation of the redundancy
plan has positive relationship with the productivity behavior such that its
implementation increased the productivity behavior of the employees.
This study would also present the employees’ level of knowledge on the needs of
Lucent and their perception on the effort exerted by the management regarding
information dissemination about the redundancy plan implementation. It would also
describe the employees’ level of trust on management after the implementation of the
plan.
