The Department of Arts and Communication is celebrating its Culture Week from February 11-15, 2013 with a theme "Celebrating the evolution of Philippine Music".

This year's culture week is a tribute to Filipino composers and singers.


 


MSP holds research ethics seminar for thesis advisers, students

The Manila Studies Program, in partnership with the Dean's Office, conducted a research ethics seminar for faculty members handling research courses as well as their students on November 7, 2012 at the CAS Little Theater.
 
This whole day seminar was held to orient thesis advisers on the UP Manila guidelines on research ethics for graduate and undergraduate thesis and to expand their knowledge on doing ethical research.
 
Dr. Paula Sioco, faculty member of Department of Social Sciences, talked about  History and Philosophy of Ethics in Research.  Prof. Fatima Alvarez-Castillo, also from the same department, followed by discussing Ethics and the Human Population. The last speaker for the morning session was Dr Ernesto Balolong, research faculty of the National Institutes of Health-Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, who discussed Ethical research in Non-Human Population and Biosafety Concerns in Research
 
In the afternoon session, Dean Dr. Reynaldo Imperial explained What is Minimal Risk? and Getting Informed Consent. Dr. Josephine Agapito of the Department of Biology discussed the issue of Privacy and Confidentiality.  Lastly, Prof. Edlyn Jimenez of the Department of Arts and Communication and UPM-NIH explained the UP Manila Guidelines on Student Thesis.
 
Dr. Laurie S. Ramiro, MSP Convenor, gave her own inputs while Prof. Jasper John Obico and Prof. Andrea Martinez facilitated the program, including the forum where students and teachers asked questions. Dr. Vicente Belizario Jr., Vice Chancellor for Research, concluded the event by delivering his closing remarks and commending the efforts of the College for promoting an environment for research through such activities.

 


Research Dissemination Forum of MSP and DAC

The Manila Studies Program and the Department of Arts and Communication will hold the fourth monthly research dissemination forum on October 10, 2012, 9am at the CAS Little Theater. This forum will be discussing the research of Prof. Diana R. Agbayani, “Narratives of Becoming: Self-Concept and Enablement of Persons with Cerebral Palsy”. This research has been presented to the International Journal of the Arts and Sciences International Conference in Harvard University. There will be reactors from CAS faculty members and health personnel from the Philippine General Hospital. Students and thesis advisers are also invited to attend. There will also be an open forum for questions and clarifications about the topic. The monthly research dissemination forum is an activity spearheaded by the Dean's office to strengthen the research culture among faculty and students of the College of Arts and Sciences.


 


MSP and DSS Research Dissemination Forum: Spratlys in the 21st Century

The Manila Studies Program and the Department of Social Sciences will hold a forum on Prof. Sharon Caringal's research entitled “Spratlys in the 21st Century: Implications on Regional Stability and Maritime Security in the Asia Pacific Region on September 26, 2012 9AM at the CAS Little Theater. This is the third forum and part of the monthly research dissemination activities spearheaded by the MSP and the Dean's office in coordination with the different CAS Departments. This aims to promote and strengthen the research culture among faculty and students of the College.

MSP Research Dissemination Forum

 

The Manila Studies Program and the Department of Biology of the College of Arts and Sciences will be conducting a Research Dissemination Forum on August 23, 2012, 9AM -10:30AM at the CAS Little Theater.  The forum will be discussing the Delimitation of Begonia L. sections Diploclinium and Baryandra (Begoniaceae) in the Philippines, a research of Prof. Rosario R. Rubite.  

This is an activity spearheaded by the Dean's office to promote and strengthen the research culture among faculty and students of the college.

DB celebrates 20th Biology Week

The Department of Biology celebrates its 20th year of institution with weeklong festivities in the upcoming Biology Week 2011. This year, the DB chose as its theme “The Forest: Our Last Stand Against Climate Change,” going along with the declaration of 2011 as the International Year of the Forest, and at the same time recognizing the ecosystem’s importance in our fight against changing global climate.

There will be a handful of activities, starting with the official Opening Ceremonies on August 23, 2011, Tuesday, which will start the ball rolling for the rest of August’s last week. This will also open the BioExhibit, a showcase of collages interpreting the BioWeek’s theme, especially created by non-Biology majors.

The 2nd BioCinema follows at 11:00 AM on the same day. This year, it will feature the Cinemalaya 2008 full-length entry Brutus: Ang Paglalakbay by director Tara Illenberger. The movie tells the story of two Mangyan children amidst the backdrop of illegal logging in the province of Mindoro. It will start screening at 1:00 PM at the Little Theater. Other films chosen for this year include the Leonardo DiCaprio-produced documentary film The 11th Hour (11:00 AM) and Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke (3:00 PM).Tickets are available at the Department of Biology.

On Wednesday, the BioSeminar will feature two speakers: Dr. Neil Aldrin Mallari, the Country Director for Flora and Fauna International, and Denise Fontanilla, representative of Haribon Foundation. They will discuss their organizations’ efforts to curb deforestation at the Little Theater starting at 9:00 AM.

Simultaneously, the BioQuiz, a quiz bee for high school students sponsored by the Department and student organization Biological Sciences Society, will hold its elimination rounds (9:00 AM at GAB-102), weeding down the competitors for the exciting finals scheduled at 1:00 PM at the Little Theater.

And finally, on Friday, the Biogyugan, a variety show-cum-competition, culminates the BioWeek with a sure extravaganza of brazen talent and creativity from the Biology majors. Show starts at 1:00 PM at the Little Theater.


 


MSP Seminar Series: Developing the research proposal and Funding Opportunities for Research

The Manila Studies Program is inviting all CAS Faculty and thesis students to attend the series of seminars and workshops on research and publication which will start on August 2011 until March of 2012. The first of the series of topics, “Developing the research proposal and Funding Opportunities for Research,” will be discussed by Prof. Laufred Hernandez on August 17, 2011 10:00-12:00nn at the CAS Alumni Room. Other research topics for the month of August shall be as follows:
