DAC Holds Two-day Lecture on A.I. Use
The Department of Arts and Communication (DAC) of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) held a two-day lecture focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the theme: “Lecture Demo on AI Use in Arts, Communication, and Media Education” last June 20-21, 2024.
The event featured Chris Millado, a renowned playwright, director, and former Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) President and Artistic Director. In his talk “Rebooking Creativity: Beginning the Adventure with AI and the Arts- A Conversation with Educators”, Millado shared his insights on using AI in practice while discussing how innovations come from artists who engage with technology.
On the second day, Edward Delos Santos Cabagnot, an AI expert and veteran filmmaker, presented a talk titled “AI and the Challenge of Mentoring Digital Natives and Creatives”, which centered around the challenges and promise of AI from a philosophical, ethical, and creative point of view. He also discussed the effects of AI on the “digital natives,” particularly on how to possibly alleviate its ill effects and how we could make the most benefit of AI for education of both digital migrants and natives.
Key points were then discussed during the open forum with the speakers after their presentations. This was followed by a group discussion among the participants.
The event opened with a warm welcome speech from CAS Dean Maria Constancia O. Carrillo. University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA) Heizel Manapat-Reyes also graced the event on its second day.
