DSS Faculty Wins Best Paper Award in Annual IRTP Conference in Finland

Assistant Professor Jerome A. Ong of the Department of Social Sciences (DSS) of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) bagged the Best Paper Award during the 15th Annual International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage (IRTP) Conference held at the Archipelago Centre Korpoström, Pargas, Finnish Archipelago, Finland held last June 26-29, 2024.

 

His research entitled “Apo Dios [Supreme God], Kararua [Soul], and Atang [Offering]: A Contemporary Study on the Influence of Indigenous Beliefs and Impact of Spanish Christianity on Ilocano Spirituality in the Philippines” was chosen for the award from 25 paper presentations made. Presenters were composed of professionals, academics, and enthusiasts from around the world who share common interest in the multifaceted realms of religious tourism and pilgrimage.

The IRTP Conference is an annual event organized by the Institute for Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage in conjunction with the International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage (IJRTP) and the Archipelago Tourism Department of Finland. It aims to provide both empirical and personal insights into the changing nature of religion in society and to further the debate for both policy-makers and academics to consider these evolving challenges within the future development of faith tourism and pilgrimage.
