Bracing for the New Wave of Learners: CAS Profs attend Gen Z Learner Seminar

Faculty members of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) attended a seminar focused on new teaching techniques for the Generation Z Learners held last August 12, 2024 at the University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) Theatre. The event was organized by the CAS Office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (OADAA) and the Committee on Instruction where 47 faculty members and guests were present.

 

The seminar discussed various topics from expert speakers on the field. First was Dr. John Christian C. Valeroso, from the College of Education of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), who discussed the techniques and best practices for facilitating learner-centered teaching. He was followed by Dr. Elenita N. Que from the College of Education of the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) who then shared thoughts and tips on proper use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the classroom setting and on student assessment.

 

Meanwhile, Dr. John Robert C. Rilveria and Dr. Francis Simonh M. Bries, both from the Department of Psychology of UPD, discussed the mental aspects of teaching Gen Z Learners. Dr. Rilveria focused his discussion on academic accommodations for students, while Dr. Bries delved into the social cognitive approach for students. Each discussion accommodated questions from the audience to create a better understanding of each topic.
