UP Manila Marks 117th UP Foundation Day with a Call for Accountability and Collective Growth

In a vibrant celebration held at the UP Manila Theater, the University of the Philippines marked its 117th Foundation Day with the theme: “Kalusugan, Kalikasan, at Kaunlaran: Sama-Samang Pagsibol sa UPM.”
The half-day program, attended by faculty, students, alumni, and partners, featured keynote messages, artistic performances, and recognitions that emphasized the University’s commitment to health, environment, and inclusive development.
Chancellor Michael L. Tee opened the celebration with a message underscoring UP Manila’s pivotal role in nation-building through health sciences and public service.
Keynote speaker Architect Paulo Alcazaren, known for his work in urban heritage and public spaces, delivered an inspiring talk on sustainable design and cultural memory.
A heartfelt Charge for Accountability was delivered by Dean Ma. Teresa G. De Guzman, PhD, Chair of the Foundation Committee. In her address, she called on the UP community to rise above complacency, challenge the status quo, and embody accountability in everyday actions—be it in promoting wellness, environmental stewardship, or social equity. “In UP, we don’t just aspire—we act. We don’t just dream—we build,” she declared to resounding applause.
The program also highlighted the Tanim-Kalusugan initiative led by Prof. Pablito Magdalita from UPLB and an insightful discussion on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by Assoc. Prof. Michelle Palumbarit, Director of CIFAL Philippines.
A symbolic tree-planting response followed, reflecting UP Manila’s concrete commitment to climate action and community resilience.
The event was made more festive with a musical performance by the NTTCHP Band and a special number by Prof. Juliet Bien of the Department of Arts and Communication. Winners of the UP Manila Foundation Photography Contest were also recognized, showcasing visual narratives aligned with this year’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The celebration concluded with the singing of “Pilipinas Kong Mahal” and “UP Naming Mahal”, affirming a collective vision of hope, justice, and growth.
